What to expect

Before Infusion

On the day of your infusion, we ask that you not eat anything in the 4 hours prior to your appointment, to avoid nausea. You can drink clear liquids up to 2 hours before your infusion.

To enhance your experience, we provide visuals and noise cancelling headphones. However, many of our patients bring their own customized playlist.

During Infusion

One of our experienced providers will take your vital signs and place a small IV in your hand or arm. This will be connected to our continuous infusion pump.

You will then lay back and relax in the recliner as the infusion is started. During the process, your vital signs will be continuously monitored for your safety.

From here, you can listen to music of your choice, watch any of our visuals, and dive deeper into your own thoughts as you experience the wonder of ketamine.

After Infusion

After receiving an infusion, you will be unable to legally drive for the rest of the day. You must have a responsible adult pick you up or you can use a rideshare service.

At the completion of your first infusion, you may feel the benefits of ketamine immediately. However, most feel relief after the second or third infusion.

History of Ketamine

Ketamine was originally developed and used as an anesthetic due to its analgesic, hypnotic, and amnestic properties at higher doses. It also maintains the highest safety profile because it does not cause respiratory depression. In 1970, the FDA approved ketamine for anesthesia and at the time, its predominant use was to aid wounded soldiers on the battlefields in Vietnam. The use of ketamine in modern medicine began to expand as researchers discovered the extensive benefits in pain management and psychiatry, most notably treatment resistant depression. Today, ketamine has emerged as possibly the single greatest breakthrough in antidepressant therapy.
Traditional antidepressant medications often take weeks or months for full therapeutic effect. Ketamine works differently as an NMDA receptor antagonist, signaling a neuronal cascade that leads to a reversal of the effects of chronic stress and depression in the prefrontal cortex of the brain. The result is a more rapid and robust antidepressant response. Patients often feel immense relief after just a single, well tolerated infusion of ketamine. Additionally, ketamine has also been shown to rapidly reduce suicidal ideations. Now, there is growing evidence for ketamine’s efficacy in other psychiatric conditions such as bipolar disorder, PTSD, OCD, and anxiety.
With the surge of interest in ketamine, research has proven its efficacy in many difficult to treat chronic pain conditions. When ketamine antagonizes the NMDA receptor, the neural transmission of pain is blocked and the tolerance to opioids is decreased, making pain medication more effective. With prolonged use, ketamine will "reset" damaged neuronal pathways in the nervous system, allowing the body to return to a more normalized state. For these reasons, ketamine is extremely effective for treating refractory chronic pain conditions such as CRPS, RSD, fibromyalgia, and chronic back pain.
