Autism Treatment with MeRT

A New Solution for Autism

Here at Redefined Mind we have worked with hundreds of children on the spectrum and seen consistently positive results. Our treatment can open up unused neural pathways and make other treatments such as ABA more effective. Our treatment on its own can show positive results in ways that no other treatment can approach.

Our team knows how to create a safe space for your child and our treatment is gentle and non-invasive.

MeRT, or Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, might be the solution you’ve been seeking. This breakthrough treatment uses gentle magnetic waves to balance and stimulate brain function, guided by sophisticated imaging and diagnostics. Each child is different, but our imaging shows us where the brain function is inhibited. After the initial EEG, you will be able to see it to. From that information our doctor can implement a treatment that is tailored specifically for your child. No two treatments are the same and this means we are right on the problem, working directly to improve your child’s life experience.

And MeRT has shown some remarkable results in patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder — results like improved communication, better mood, less overwhelm, increased control of their environment, and much more.

MeRT: A Safe, Gentle, Effective Approach to Autism Treatment

Image
The specialized magnetic instrumentation we use in MeRT treatment is gentle — it simply feels like light taps on the head.

Here at Redefined Mind, we offer MeRT, or Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, to treat Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This treatment is completely drug-free and non-invasive. And we take great care of our patients on the autism spectrum to ensure they have a comfortable experience throughout their treatment.

The key to MeRT is the initial testing with a qEEG (quantitative encephalogram), also called brain mapping. The EEG will show electrical signals in the brain of a child with autism that differ from those of a child who does not have ASD. After a thorough analysis of the test results, we can then create a customized treatment using rTMS (repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, an FDA-cleared therapy).

The TMS delivers gentle magnetic pulses to those specific areas of the brain which are not functioning as they should be. This feels like gentle taps on the head. By doing this, we optimize brain communication to be more organized and in sync. This can allow the patient to function at a higher level, and in most cases, to have better communication skills, social skills, and more independence.

Additionally, MeRT can be used alongside other therapies, such as ABA, and has been shown to help those therapies work even better.

Frank and Mary’s story with their son, Frankie.

“In the third week, something happened. The family was driving around sight-seeing when they realized that they were getting lost in the California desert. Mary and Frank began to argue, and right in the midst of it, the moment they had waited six years for finally came. “I remember he said a seven-word sentence basically to the effect of ‘I want you two to stop fighting.’ And it shocked me so much that I almost stopped breathing,” Frank recounts. “I looked at my wife and said ‘Do you realize what just happened? He just said a seven-word sentence.’ I had tears in my eyes, and I was happy at the same time. He was so upset that it pushed these words through.”

From there, Frankie’s progress snowballed. They returned home after only a month, but the difference between the child who arrived in California and the one who left was striking. They had taken a video of Frankie on the plane when they started the journey, “and he’s just making baby babble,” Frank says. “We have another video of him on the plane coming back. And he looks out the window and says, ‘Goodbye California, see you soon.’ This was a nonverbal kid, 30 days later. And his feet are flat on the ground.”

Doctors said Frankie would continue to improve even without regular MeRTalbeit a bit slower. Today, he is 11 years old, verbal, and attends a public school. He tells Frank stories about times when he wanted to speak but couldn’t. “He goes ‘You know, I’m so glad we went to the brain treatment because now I can talk,’” says Frank.

Autism Spectrum Disorder Is different for every child. MeRT addresses the INDIVIDUAL nature of autism.

Autism affects everyone differently. Even if a child is diagnosed at a similar level as another, they can still have individual symptoms, ways of dealing with the outside world, and communication methods. And each can be very different in their behaviors and development. So, it makes sense that autism treatment should be unique to each patient.

That’s what makes MeRT such a breakthrough. By focusing on each patient’s unique brainwave patterns, we can treat their symptoms far more precisely than through past methods. And that can make all the difference when it comes to treating your child’s unique symptoms — and unlocking their potential.

As you have read, targeted rTMS is a key element of our MeRT treatment for autism. Many studies have shown the effectiveness of rTMS for autism treatment. Here are some of the most recent:
From the 2022 study cited above: “This study presents evidence on the efficacy and safety of α-rTMS in improving ASD symptoms, quality of life and comorbid sleep troubles in children.”

Starting Autism Treatment at Redefined Mind in Cypress, TX

Since MeRT is a relatively new treatment, you may have questions about whether it’s right for your child. We want to make it easy to get all the information you need, so your first step is a simple phone consultation with our New Patient Coordinator. During this free consultation, you can discuss your child’s symptoms and history, ask questions, and learn about the treatment in full.

At that point, should you decide to get started with MeRT treatment for your child, we will set up a series of appointments. The first two appointments will last approximately 45 minutes each. Then, we will begin your child’s assessment period to see how the treatment may benefit them.

Testing

Your first appointment will involve performing a qEEG, also called brain mapping. This is a simple, painless test performed here in our office. We place a cap on your child’s head to measure electrical activity in their brain, and we also record the heart’s electrical signals with an EKG.

This testing will map out any areas in the brain which are not performing as they should. Then, our team will carefully analyze the test results and develop a treatment plan customized to your child’s specific condition.

Consultation

Your second appointment, after we have fully reviewed the test results and created the treatment plan, is a one-on-one consultation with the doctor. You may attend this appointment in person, or if it’s more comfortable, you and your child can attend virtually from your home.

During your consultation, we will discuss your child’s test results with you and cover our treatment protocols. We’ll also answer your questions and let you know more about what to expect during your child’s assessment period of treatment.

Assessment Period

During the assessment period, we will perform two weeks of treatment (9 days total) followed by a new qEEG. This will enable us to see how your child is responding to the treatment. We will review the new test results compared to the one we did initially and note any positive changes. We will also look for symptom improvements at this time.

If we see a positive response to treatment, you will have likely noticed some improvements as well. At that point, we will schedule additional MeRT treatment in two-week intervals.

At the end of each two-week period of treatment, we will take another qEEG and EKG to monitor your child’s progress. We will also consult with you every two weeks to confirm that the test results are continuing to show improvements. This entire time, we will be caring for your child with the utmost compassion. We know how important this treatment is for your child — and you — and will ensure we create a positive, comfortable experience.

You should know that most conditions treated with MeRT provide noticeable results after four to eight weeks of treatment, and these results are long-lasting. However, each patient is different, and the results may vary.
